Hydrogen truck: testing in the Stuttgart area

The Hylix-B hydrogen truck project was initially intended to demonstrate that hydrogen propulsion is a forward-looking technology for trucks. It also outlined how demand for green hydrogen could be scaled up by converting logistics fleets to hydrogen-powered fuel cell trucks. To this end, a prototype of a fully electric truck with a total weight of 26 tons and fuel cell drive was built in the Hylix-B real-world laboratory.

The project was funded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Environment, Climate, and Energy as part of the “Transformation of the Energy System in Baden-Württemberg” program.

The results of the real-world laboratory are highly relevant for the development of a supply chain for hydrogen from renewable sources. This is because the gradual increase in the number of trucks with fuel cell technology could enable the supply chain and thus the production of green hydrogen to be scaled in a controlled manner. The real-world laboratory is therefore also contributing to the Baden-Württemberg hydrogen roadmap.

The project has been formally completed since March 31, 2022.

Update 2023: The Hylix-B project, funded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Environment, recently led to the founding of IONTRAK, a company based in Zell unter Aichelberg that equips trucks with hydrogen drives and develops special components for this purpose.
