H2@Hydro
Production of hydrogen with electricity from hydropower at RWE’s Albbruck site

The core of the H2@Hydro project is to be the construction of a 50 MW electrolysis plant for the production of hydrogen. The electricity to operate the electrolyser, which is due to go into operation by the end of 2029, would largely come from the Albbruck run-of-river power plant. The green hydrogen is to be fed into an H2 pipeline and used on both sides of the High Rhine in the Freiburg-Lörrach-Waldshut and Basel-Zurich regions. Industrial and logistics companies are seen as potential customers.

In addition to the green hydrogen – around 8,000 tons per year – the heat and oxygen produced during electrolysis will also be used. The green oxygen can be used as a resource for the association’s wastewater treatment plant. The green district heating can heat residential and commercial areas as well as the new Hochrhein health park. It can also be used for hot water supply and cooling systems.

RWE is implementing this project together with the project partners badenovaNETZE, iwb and Fritz Meyer AG.
