The high quality of life in the district of Waldshut must be safeguarded and the challenges of climate change must be actively tackled and endangered habitats protected. Various measures have been taken to achieve this: the district has been participating in the European Energy Award (eea) since 2017, has been EEA-certified since 2021 and adopted an integrated energy and climate protection concept in summer 2022, among other things.
Hydrogen is another important building block on the road to climate neutrality and achieving Baden-Württemberg’s climate protection targets by 2040. The availability of hydrogen secures the Waldshut district as a business location and thus strengthens the competitiveness of local companies. The district actively supports securing the entire H2 value chain in the region and is in close contact with the various players in the hydrogen industry.
H2 will be available in the district as soon as the 50 MW electrolyser in the municipality of Albbruck starts production and produces 8,000 tons of green hydrogen per year or further planned smaller electrolysers are built decentrally. The supply will be grid-connected if the companies are located in the immediate vicinity of the hydrogen pipeline or grid-independent via road or rail. A hydrogen economy must be established now so that it can be seamlessly integrated into a hydrogen supply system later on. The district of Waldshut wants to be a pioneer in the field of hydrogen technology in rural areas and thus demonstrate the innovative strength of the region. This ambitious goal requires a joint effort – also beyond the state borders towards Switzerland and France. That is why the district is also a member of 3H2. The economic development department of the Waldshut district plays a proactive role here and supports regional companies whose future is to be promoted and secured.
