H2-Cluster: Hafen Basel
Swiss Rhine ports to become hydrogen hub

The Rhine port of Basel offers perfect infrastructure and all the advantages of a modern public inland port, thus providing ideal conditions for establishing an H2 cluster.

Four partners want to jointly develop the port areas of Birsfelden and Muttenz into Switzerland’s first hydrogen hub. Their vision is not only to distribute hydrogen using the existing infrastructure, but also to produce, store, and supply the ecological energy locally.

The tank storage company Avia and the energy company Varo Energy are already important players in the Rhine ports today. Varo operates two tank storage facilities in Birsfelden. Fritz Meyer AG from Basel, together with other member companies of the Avia Association, is focusing on hydrogen as a fuel for filling stations. Avia is expanding this business area as part of a network. IWB has been focusing on CO2-neutral energy for many years and is an expert in the production of renewable energy.

The Vision H2 Hub Switzerland is now being launched and formulated jointly. This includes, among other things, defining the long-term role of the ports and the local distribution between the locations. The four partners want to create the essential conditions for the establishment of the H2 Hub Switzerland. They have laid the foundation for this in a joint declaration of intent. In addition, applications for hydrogen are to be tested soon: the use of hydrogen-powered trucks, the installation of the first hydrogen storage facilities, and the construction of filling stations for rail, road, and ship transport.
