Landkreis Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald
The district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald was created on January 1, 1973 from the former districts of Freiburg, Müllheim and Hochschwarzwald. Around 250,000 inhabitants live in its 50 towns and municipalities. 40 kilometers of state border with France form the interface for intensive cross-border cooperation.

The district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, which has around 250,000 inhabitants and borders on France, is committed to the energy transition.
The district is currently pursuing three goals with its activities in the field of hydrogen: To promote mobility with green hydrogen in the district, to expand the possibilities for decarbonizing the TREA Breisgau waste incineration plant and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the waste collection vehicle fleet. For this reason, the district is contributing its resources to the development of an infrastructure for green hydrogen.
The district council has tasked the administration with the conceptual development and planning of a local hydrogen ecosystem for the production of green hydrogen. Encouraged by the results of a feasibility study carried out on behalf of the district, the administration has held numerous discussions with energy suppliers, gas trading companies, logistics companies and service providers specializing in renewable energies, as well as with operators of renewable energy plants. The discussions have shown that there is also great interest in investing in the production of green hydrogen in the district. Several suitable locations for the construction of plants for the production, storage and transportation of green hydrogen are currently being investigated.
