First and foremost, Abfallwirtschaft und Stadtreinigung Freiburg GmbH wants to ensure waste disposal for the city of Freiburg and thus its services, largely independently of corporate policy and international crises. At the same time, ASF wants to fulfill the goals of the city of Freiburg and the federal government and set up a climate-neutral vehicle fleet.
The hydrogen targets of the entire company are closely linked to the “H2-Deponie Eichelbuck” project. After extensive evaluation, ASF has come to the conclusion that in the near future an alternative drive system that meets the requirements in terms of range and performance can only be provided by hydrogen vehicles. Thanks to various subsidies, several hydrogen vehicles have already been purchased and 22 hydrogen trucks are currently in use. In the final stage, around 60 vehicles from the heavy-duty sector with hydrogen drives are to be used and thus the entire vehicle fleet for municipal collection as well as the commercial part will be operated in a climate-neutral manner. The hydrogen filling station project at Eichelbuck is to be implemented in order to obtain this necessary quantity of hydrogen and also to ensure a supply. By building the filling station, ASF will also become a producer and distributor of hydrogen. This is because even with 60 vehicles, depending on driving behavior and operating procedures, large quantities of green hydrogen produced locally and cheaply could be available to third parties every year. A partnership is particularly important here, also because the operation of a highly technical plant for the ASF is only possible together with partners who can supply “know-how” and materials.
