3H2-On the spot #3: Photovoltaics meets hydrogen at August Weckermann KG
In cooperation with the PV-Netzwerk Südlicher Oberrhein of the Energieagentur Regio Freiburg GmbH, we visited August Weckermann KG, which presented its own energy ecosystem with a PV system, battery storage, rainwater treatment, electrolysis, hydrogen storage, and fuel cells.

Review: Be informed about regional hydrogen expertise and take part in valuable exchanges – that’s what you can do at the “3H2-On the spot” event series! The 3H2 network introduces itself and provides insights into the wide range of topics in the hydrogen sector.

For the third edition of our event series, we invited you to August Weckermann KG in Eisenbach together with the PV-Network. The company, which is the world market leader in the field of diamond cutting, has set up a unique flagship project for our region: The company’s own energy ecosystem combines a PV system, battery storage, rainwater treatment, electrolysis, hydrogen storage and a fuel cell in order to make the topics of sustainability, energy self-sufficiency and security of supply future-proof within the plant.

Solar power is collected using PV panels and stored in a battery for short-term requirements. Hydrogen is used for long-term storage. The PV electricity is used for the electrolysis of rainwater, which produces hydrogen. This is stored in large tanks. Fuel cells allow the electricity to be reconverted to electricity on demand and used for the production.

The system is currently in test operation and is due to go into regular operation in 6-8 weeks.

Seeing a system like this in operation with their own eyes was a great experience for all participants. It shows that something is happening in the region!
Thanks to Jens Schuler from August Weckermann KG and Christopher Voglstätter from Haas Engineering GmbH & Co. KG for their detailed explanations of the planning, construction and operation of the system and for the tour, and thanks to all participants for their interest!

An impressive lighthouse project that shows how the energy transition can succeed!
