Green H2 Stuttgart
Hydrogen plant at the port of Stuttgart: 1,000 tons of hydrogen annually from green electricity

A hub for supplying the Stuttgart region with green hydrogen is being built at the port of Stuttgart. Stadtwerke Stuttgart has developed the logistics concept for the hydrogen supply. High-purity green hydrogen will be produced at the hub from the end of 2026. This will then be transported via a pipeline in the Neckar Valley and by trailer to customers’ delivery points. Applications in industry as well as for heat supply and for bus and heavy goods transport complete the project. It is a central building block for a holistic economic energy transition in Stuttgart.

The three sub-projects:

1. Green Hydrogen Hub: a state-of-the-art hydrogen plant is being built at the port of Stuttgart. Green electricity will be used as an energy source in the electrolysis process for hydrogen production. In the first stage of expansion, up to 1,000 tons of this high-purity green hydrogen will be produced annually. The Green Hydrogen Hub will become the basis for a reliable and climate-neutral hydrogen supply for the region. The hydrogen produced there can be transported flexibly and used in a variety of ways. It is particularly suitable for industrial applications as well as fuel cell buses and trucks. The construction phase began in April 2025.

2. H2 GeNeSiS pipeline: Sub-project two consists of a pipeline and one of the electrolyzers in the hub. This module, called H2 GeNeSiS, aims to establish a sustainable hydrogen economy in the Neckar Valley. The first step is to build a hydrogen pipeline almost seven kilometers long. This will run underground from the port of Stuttgart along the Neckar in two directions: east to Stuttgart-Gaisburg and west to the Esslingen district boundary.

3. HyPulseST: The third sub-project deals with the application of green hydrogen and its role in the energy transition. It consists of two hydrogen filling stations for buses and trucks, both of which are connected to the H2 GeNeSiS pipeline. The project also includes the purchase and testing of fuel cell vehicles and a combined heat and power plant.
