3H2-On the spot #11: RMA’s certified H₂ test benches & electrolysis project
On the 23rd of September 2026, we travelled to Rheinau to visit the certified test benches and the electrolysis project at RMA Mess- und Regeltechnik GmbH & Co KG. KG.

During the eleventh edition of our ‘3H2 – On the Spot’ event series and the ‘GreenSKHy Technical Visit’, participants had the opportunity to explore RMA’s certified test benches and electrolyser project in Rheinau.

The day began with fascinating presentations by RMA Mess- und Regeltechnik GmbH & Co. KG and the HYDROPORTKEHL project. The focus was on RMA’s two state-approved high-pressure test benches: the H2-Loop and the Twinloop. As part of the HYDROPORTKEHL project, RMA Kehl GmbH & Co. KG, the Kehl Port Authority (KdöR) and Badenova AG & Co. KG are collaborating to install a 1 MW PEM electrolyser. The aim is to produce sustainable hydrogen, oxygen and waste heat, thereby establishing a comprehensive hydrogen ecosystem at the Port of Kehl.

The H2-Loop and Twinloop test benches have been specially developed for on-site calibration and verification of hydrogen gas meters. To this end, a pioneering test programme has been drawn up in collaboration with SGS TÜV Saar.

After enjoying some light refreshments, the group toured the facilities. The H2-Loop’s design as a closed-loop system was particularly impressive. Here, the hydrogen is stabilised by a high-performance blower housed in a pressurised chamber for safety reasons. The hydrogen is then passed through reference meters and the test units.

Projects such as this one help to bring the energy transition to life, strengthen regional economic growth, and actively shape a sustainable future.

Many thanks once again to our hosts at RMA, Dr Manuel Schmitz-Elbers and Denis Lustig, for their warm welcome, for presenting RMA’s extensive hydrogen portfolio and for answering all our questions.
